In 2018 we are excited to be combining our Volunteering programme with the incredible Mara Marathon. The Marathon is more than just a run, it is an adventure of a lifetime. The Maasai Mara run participants can choose between a 5k or half marathon in a spectacular annual race held in the scenic and world acclaimed Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is a spectacle that gives the race participants the rare and memorable privilege of running in the panoramic reserve.
Our 9 day experience combines the opportunity for participants to spend time at our schools, meeting and working with the people that their fund-raising efforts have supported and the unique opportunity to run in the home of the worlds best runners alongside nature. The trip will take in not just the run and the volunteering, but also the opportunity to take a safari in the Maasai Mara, to spend time with communities and understand the lives of those living in the Rift Valley, supported by the Memusi Foundation.
Every day you will be given the opportunity to run in routes around Magadi, supported by a Kenyan runner running in the home of the best runners in the World within the Great Rift Valley.
Below is a common agenda with flexibility for minor change:
Day 1 - Depart from home flying to Nairobi Airport (this may include 1 stopover during the flight)
Day 2 - Early start - flights will normally land early morning. Travel to Maasai Mara nature reserve, enjoying a game drive en-route to evening accommodation.
Day 3 - Race Day - Early start drive to the start of the Maasai Mara Marathon where you will join the race.
Day 4 - A full day of enjoying a game drive in the reserve that is regarded as the best Safari experience in Kenya.
Day 5 - Depart your accommodation and leave for the journey to Magadi. Upon arrival you can settle into your accommodation (these will be a tented village, fully air conditioned, double bed, toilet, shower and sink).
Day 6 to 8 - Fully supported volunteering programme, providing you with the unique opportunity to see the projects and people that your fundraising is supporting. You will be directly involved in supporting programmes from building to sport.
Day 9 - Return flight home
Why Maasai Mara Marathon?
Having met the Mara Marathon team we are bowled over by the people who pull this event together. The team have a rich history of delivering the event, but in addition we love the ethos of the event; giving back. The Masai Mara Marathon’s main objective is to raise funds to support conservation of the Mara National reserve as well as community-based projects around the Maasai Mara. The Marathon, which is held within Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve, is a highly visible athletic event with immense media covering. The Marathon aims to raise funds that will channel towards conservation of the Maasai Mara ecosystem and raise awareness of the plight of the communities and wildlife that live within and around the Mara.
